Wearing them back to back underscored the notion that materials make a massive difference. The stainless steel reference felt present. Give your wrist a jiggle and you know it’s there. The black dial and bezel are safe and relatively restrained for a dive watch, and the polished surfaces make it feel like it wants to be just a tad fancy. It’s a tool watch, but it’s got some luxury shine. Completely dressed in black ceramic, from the 34mm diameter case to the link bracelet, the watch features a few touches of rose gold: the screws that secure the octagonal bezel, the center of the crown, the raised hour markers and the Royal Oak hour, minute and second casio edefice hands.Believe it or not, there is an incredibly crass, awesomely period-appropriate version with italicised Roman numerals used to mark the hours instead.Unveiled at Watches and Wonders, the Historiques 222 watch was an instant hit.I’ve always loved a good rectangular curved case as well, and the new Anatom strikes me as the perfect 21st century play on that look in a way that feels entirely contemporary without feeling the need to call back to every component of the 1980s original.
